From a reader on 9/27/07
Lately I have been browsing forums dedicated to the hobby of shortwave listening. (SWLing) I started out just to see what's new in shortwave receivers.
International broadcasters are ABANDONING SW broadcasts in English to North America. Their reasons are practical. The only people who listen are survival minded and hobbyists. Hardly a viable market. But why is this?
The reason, I believe, is because SW is NOT offered at radio-TV receiver outlets. Even Radio Shack has stopped selling SW sets. It's NEVER even mentioned. Even in homeland defense security recommendations for survival packs they NEVER say to have a radio with SW capability. They stress radios that tune LOCAL AM & FM stations. Listening to web casts is HIGHLY recommended OVER OWNING a SW receiver for those who want to listen to SW.
By omission, the actual owning of SW radios is DISCOURAGED in the US!!! I think I know why this is. In EVERY other form of 'consumer' communications there is a 'gatekeeper' between YOU and the SOURCE! Only in SW does it come DIRECT from source to YOU, without having a gatekeeper between source and you!
They CAN'T allow this! When 'they' decide to clamp down they can't have you listening to outside sources of information.
On a personal note, when I was a boy I had a friend named Angelo. His parents, from Italy, had a wire antenna from the back of his house to the cloths line pole in his backyard. His father had a SW capable radio that he used to listen to Italian Opera direct from Italy. When WW2 broke out the FBI came to his house and BUSTED his radio by cutting the coils! Talk about paranoid!
I also know that the FBI sent a directive to EVERY radio repair shop during WW2 instructing them that any broken radio that was brought in for repair was to be repaired but if it had SW capability the SW was to be DISABLED!
